MOMpreneurs: Taking Care of You

Have you ever thought, or even admitted to someone, that you simply do not have time for yourself because of your work and parenting responsibilities? And have you ever had that someone look at you and lean her head to one side and say, “Really?” Unfortunately, many people do not understand what it is like to be a mom and an entrepreneur. Here are some ways that can give you the quality time for you that you deserve.

Get up Early

This can be a hard one, especially if you are not a morning person. However, if you try it for a week or so, you may find that getting up an hour earlier will help you begin your day peacefully and calmly. We all know how hard it is to press the snooze button over and over again, only to find that it has led to rushing around mindlessly and getting the kids up. Setting that alarm an hour earlier (without hitting the snooze button!) will give you some time for yourself.

Depend on Positive Affirmations

Oh those quotes! And oh, how influential they can be! The mind is a powerful organ, and positive affirmations may help you get your mind in a positive state. Find positive affirmations about women, moms, and entrepreneurs that strike a chord within you. Copy and paste them onto your desktop, your phone, or write them down and put them in your office. Doing whatever it takes to always have them close to you will ensure that you will always have an emotional and motivating pick-me-up on the spot.

Find that Friend

Many moms that are also entrepreneurs take solace in knowing that they have one or two very close friends that share similar goals and dreams. Meeting up for coffee one day a week, or getting together for lunch can make a significant difference and improvement to your emotional well-being. Taking care of you can also involve taking care of each other by lifting them up emotionally, forgetting about work for a while, and just by laughing together.

Stay on the Path

Find a good routine and stick with it. This can be tricky with children, but it can be done. Children, especially young ones, crave routine and structure as well. Come up with a schedule for you and your children, and be sure to have time in there for just you. A routine with specific times and what is to be accomplished in those times will keep unexpected stress away, or at least significantly lessen it.

Meditate

Many people love meditation, either in a spiritual form, through yoga, through repeating a mantra, or just simple and relaxing reflection. Meditation is commonly and successfully done to relax and relieve stress. You can meditate for 15 minutes a day and work your way up to 45 minutes a day; it is whatever works for you. One thing is for certain: meditation works for many people by calming the mind and giving a sense of refreshment and renewal.

All of these suggestions have one thing in common: you are spending time on you. Finding time for yourself, even if you don’t think you have the time, will help relieve stress. If you are a mom who is also an entrepreneur, carve out a small portion of your day (even if it is only 15 minutes!) just to focus on you.
