No BS Planet Fitness Review!

Planet Fitness has some interesting strategies. I’m sure you have heard some, like ordering free pizza and donuts for their customers, Tootsie Rolls on the check in counter and your welcome bag, as well as a strict no body building activity or dress policy. The lunk alarm. It’s all true I’ve seen it, except for the last one, I haven’t seen anybody attempt to do any body building activity or dress in that manner.

If you just rolled your eyes then you’re exactly like I was when I heard about this! Here I am trying to help people change their lives through fitness and nutrition and here is Planet Fitness enticing people with their $10 a month plan and giving them pizza and donuts!

See PF knows exactly what they are doing. They are not marketing to the elite group of people who eat clean 99% of the time or think that they should. They are marketing to their people…which extends through out to the culture of the place.

I wore a Planet Fitness shirt this weekend to a Beachbody Celebration and people looked at me and commented as if I was some sort of abomination. They meant well and are just trying to protect their lifestyle. This same group of people I love and are a symbol of the everyday person getting in shape at their own pace, on their own terms, were being elitist hypocrites. And you know what, so was I!

Here is where I say I was wrong. Here’s where I say I was no better than the people that fat shame and just as bad if not worse than people’s thoughts of how Planet Fitness is a shitty company for speaking directly to their niche.

So why was I wrong? I was wrong because like so many others I was being a hypocrite. Laughing and joking that a fitness place gives out pizza and donuts once a month…when I myself ate pizza at least once a month. I was wrong because I assumed they were just “fattening people up” so they could keep them in the web of plans and fees and up charges. When what they were creating was an environment that spoke to the 98%. They have never asked me to pay for anything I don’t need or have already paid for. They are very hands off, but quick to help if needed. This isn’t irresponsible…this is brilliant.

Does anyone have to eat the pizza or the Tootsie Rolls or wear shirts that show off everything but their nipples? NO! Let’s not give all the power away here. We’re all the way we are because of our own choices and because we chose to say yes or no when someone offered us tempting deliciousness. But for me that feels way more relatable than going into a gym where perfection is expected. I’m an advocate of the 85-15% rule. Do it healthy and hard 85% of the time, the other 15% enjoy life! I would say once a month pizza and donuts fall into the 15%.

I am a fitness and nutrition consultant because I loved working out with easy to use programs, easy meal plans, relatively inexpensive nutrition, in a do it on your own terms without judgment type of lifestyle. In my opinion Planet Fitness is doing the same thing. I now use their equipment for $10 a month that doesn’t fit or I’d rather not pay for in my own home. I still use my workouts I have always used at home because I can stream them to my phone via Beachbody On Demand with their free WiFi.

I feel many of us who get into fitness and nutrition do a disservice to the rest of the people who would like to but don’t know how or are afraid to start. We do this by running around telling everyone how the way it worked for me is the best way and anyone that doesn’t do it that way is wrong. No wonder people are overwhelmed and paralyzed to even start…look at all the contradicting things you find when you search Google.

If you are looking for a Simon Says way to get your shit together with a no judgement policy with a bit of tough love I know some people willing to help. If you don’t have space or equipment, I know a place that would love to have you.

  1. I'm 240 pounds train hard , take my water jug, mix my supplements in the locker room , wear cut offs and flex in the mirror at Planet fitness , they just say what they way but don't do shit about it , never once have I been told to , quiet down or stop grunting lol . planet beast mode all day

  2. I totally disagree with the video guy's opinion. I think the gym and it's employees owe it to the customers to help guide them to proper nutrition and as well as how to get the most out of the gym equipment and proper technique. Legitimizing their bad choices by serving them pizza and doughnuts is absolutely horrible, it's like serving crack at a rehab center. How about a healthy juice bar instead?

  3. Thanks bro; I've seen a lot of hate on PF and its good to get a balanced perspective. Besides, its the work you do that matters more than the location. thanks

  4. I'm nowhere near an expert bodybuilder, but I can't approve of any gym that doesn't have barbells. The dumbbells to 75 are ok, as I'm a woman, and the weights that are puny for men are crushing for me.

A smith machine, however, is just dangerous with squats, deadlifts, etc. It's ok for some specific exercises, but terrible for most.

Also, cardio is… ok, because doing literally anything is better than sitting on the couch, but it's… inefficient. Bad way to try to lose weight (or rather fat). Diet is the single most important thing, followed by mostly resistance training and/or HIIT.

PF gives no diet advice, and gives out pizza. Yes, it's once a month, and yes, you don't have to eat it, but as someone mentioned- it's temptation you really, really don't need, especially if you're already struggling. Add that to the cardio bunny mentality, and you have one inefficient and possibly dangerous (smith machine) combination.

I pay 35$ for all the weights I could dream of, classes, squat racks, unlimited entry to every gym in the entire country from this chain (and so a pool and sauna depending on location), and my most beloved barbells.

Even the pink lady ones I avoid because seriously… there are bars with set weight if you can't do it with a barbell and they don't make you look like a 3-pound dumbbellina.

  5. I'm sorry, but no one is talking about this and someone has to tell you. Your facial hair is uneven- don't hate me for being honest ☹️ I liked your video

  6. I go to planet fitness occasionally because my friend has a guest pass and I help her train there but I just have a strange vibe being there that I haven’t been able to shrug off. Idk what it is

  7. Ive seen  the lunk alarm go off many times.Never for any lunk. They just used it to signal other employees to come to the front desk.I asked every time it happened.
A judgement free zone?Thats a laugh.Notice how they have an official derogatory term for certain types of clients-Lunks. If that isn't judgemental I don't know what is.And the fake political correctness isn't even the worst thing about  this place.
Notice that they wont take credit cards for member payments. They are the only gym that wont. There is a reason for that.Unauthorized charges, eroneous charges and bullshit charges can be disputed with a credit card.It could be 6 months and a lot of work before they get their money if they get it at all.And this outfit has an inordinate number of billing complaints-its what they do.So now they require your bank account # and routing # and when they bllshit charge someone, they instantly have your money and you will have to fight to get it back-good luck on that.
Tell them no way and walk out.

  8. Why the heck in this world people are getting upset about a free pizza and tootsie rolls from pf? I didn’t see wrong about that,if you’re really into getting into shape u can avoid eating pizza or candies and start working out..I can’t complain for $10. A month gym fee,is there any gym that can charge u lower than Planet fitness?no,right? And Guest what? I just started my membership at Planet fitness and I blame myself why I didn’t do that before, maybe because I was intimidated by some of the body builders and I’m out of shape.my first day at PF is great! I didn’t feel intimidated at all.

  9. Thank you thank you thank you. As a staff member at pf I hate hearing all these negative coments about the company by the exact people they are keeping out of their clubs. This is not muscle beach, this is not mr universe, this is a place where you can go and be active and not feel like your inferior. Planet fitness is for the old lady that just wants to walk on the tredmill, the highschool kid who wants to bulk up a bit over the summer, the girl who wants to just workout and not get hit on by every steroid pumped dude within 100 feet. And to all the people comenting on how the staff looks, you dont have to be a body builder to know how to be healthy, are you going to go to olive garden and say they cant cook because they arnt from italy… no… so why is a gym any different. Their thats my rant. Glad to see someone finaly gets what pf is suposed to be.
